On May 22, Sandra Jones, Executive Director of Global Programs and lecturer at Heller, was presented with the We Rise Together Award for Social Justice at Duolingo’s 5th annual We Rise Together Awards Ceremony in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Each year, this event honors a growing global community of changemakers for their outstanding contributions in improving education access and enriching the lives of students, especially those who are displaced and underserved. The 2025 awardees, nominated by their peers, are distinguished individuals who embody the Duolingo English Test’s mission to make higher education more accessible and inclusive, and to reimagine what’s possible in the global education system.

Jones was recognized for her championship of student advocacy and commitment to supporting those who often face unimaginable challenges. Heller’s student body is a vibrant tapestry of cultures and experiences, representing over 50 countries, many of which are embroiled in conflict or recovering from past turmoil. These students bring with them stories of resilience and courage, and Jones ensures that their journey at Heller is one of empowerment and growth. Her nominators noted that she is a pivotal figure for students navigating the complexities of admission, providing unwavering support for those applying for asylum, facing financial hardships, or confronting academic hurdles. Jones’ guidance goes beyond graduation as she maintains nurturing relationships with dozens of alumni, each of whom carries forward her legacy of compassion and excellence.

“Her ability to seamlessly connect, support, and inspire makes her every dean's dream employee and every student's greatest ally,” remarked Kevin Hostetler, Head of Institutional Success and Marketing at Duolingo. In presenting her with this year’s award, Hostetler said to Jones, “Your dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment transforms lives. Your unwavering commitment is not just commendable—it is transformative.”

Duolingo’s English Test is currently used as part of the admissions process at Heller to test English proficiency and readiness for graduate school. “I was extremely honored to receive this award from Duolingo and their English Test Division,” said Jones. “Their test has been a game changer in access to higher education for international students, providing a low-cost, online-proctored option that can be taken from anywhere in the world.”

Jones’ background includes seven years in technology and 17 years in the field of conflict resolution with an emphasis on social psychology and social identity, genocide studies, and the creation of experiential learning programs in post-conflict regions. She is also a lecturer in the Conflict Resolution and Coexistence Program, and has been part of the program’s leadership since 2013. Her research focuses on the social identity of conflict, in both international and domestic contexts. Jones also wears a variety of hats at the Heller School, including work with multiple academic programs, admissions, and the dean’s office.

“Social justice for me is providing equity to all students without judgement, meeting each individual where they are, and providing the best educational experience possible that extends well beyond graduation,” said Jones. “I am grateful to be a member of the Brandeis community, which prioritizes high-touch education within an active and respectful multi-cultural context.”
