Special Student Status

The Heller School for Social Policy and Management welcomes you to enroll in a select number of courses as a Special Student (non-degree-seeking) without formally matriculating. Please note that this form is not for Brandeis employees, who may wish to follow the steps provided by Human Resources for Tuition Remission.

To apply:

  1. Review our course schedules and descriptions (typically available before the start month of general registration: July for the fall term and January for the spring term) and decide what course(s) you want to pursue.
  2. Read the policies and regulations below.
  3. Obtain digital copies of your latest degree transcript and your detailed resume, including work experience and educational background, to upload and submit via the online request form.
  4. Complete the Special Student (Non-Degree) Application.
  5. Secure approvals of Academic and Student Services and the course instructor.
  6. Verify access to your student account and course schedule via Workday.
  7. Pay the course tuition fees online or in person through Student Financial Services.

Please note:

  • No more than four courses (eight credits) taken for credit may be transferable to degree candidacy if the student is admitted to the PhD or MPP program.
  • No more than two courses (four credits) taken for credit may be transferable to degree candidacy if the student is admitted to the MS GHPM, MA SID, or MA COEX program.

Admissions

Admission to any course is contingent upon (1) the instructor's approval, (2) fulfillment of any prerequisites, and (3) space availability in the course. Special Students are considered equally with all other applicants to the Heller School. Completing any course as a Special Student does not guarantee admission into any degree program. Special Student applications must be received by the following dates: August 15th for the fall term, January 1st for the spring term, May 15th for the summer I term, and July 1st for the summer II term

Notification and Course Enrollment

Academic and Student Services will review and process completed applications. Applicants will be notified via email of a decision within 5-7 business days. Students are informed and administratively registered if accepted into the course(s). Any possible interest changes must be communicated to Academic and Student Services by the University's Academic Calendar deadlines.

Tuition and Payment:

The per-course tuition rates for full semester and module courses are typically published near the start of each fall semester and can be found under the "Part-time Students" section of the Cost of Attendance page on the Admissions and Financial Aid website. Tuition may increase by 3-4% each academic year. Special Students are not eligible for financial aid. Payments can be made through Student Financial Services once the student is officially enrolled.

Parking:

You may obtain a parking permit application from the Public Safety in the Stoneman building between 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. You may also complete the online permit application.

Refund Policy:

All refunds are subject to review and final approval by the University Controller and will be disbursed only upon written request.
