Looking back on my application process to the Heller School, there are a few things I would absolutely do the same, and a few things I would approach differently. Applying to graduate school can seem overwhelming at first, especially when balancing other commitments, but reflecting on the experience now, there are several lessons that stand out. For anyone considering Heller, here are a few tips that I found helpful (and wish I had fully embraced earlier):
1. Apply early if you can
If there’s one thing I would change, it’s applying earlier in the cycle. I submitted my application late, and while everything worked out, applying early gives you more flexibility, more time to prepare materials thoughtfully, and less stress overall. It also allows you to focus on other opportunities, like fellowships or housing, once you’ve submitted. Give yourself time.
2. Spend time exploring the Heller website in depth
One of the most valuable resources during my application process was the Heller School website. Taking the time to really explore program details, faculty interests, course offerings, and student experiences helped me better understand how I would fit into the program. It also made a difference when writing my application, as I could speak more clearly about why Heller, and specifically the COEX program, aligned with my goals. Additionally, it holds the answer to pretty much any admissions question, which is convenient.
3. Be clear about your “why”
Heller is a mission-driven school, and having a clear sense of why you want to pursue this field is important. During the application process, I found it helpful to reflect on my interests in policy, negotiation, and conflict resolution, and how they connected to my long-term goals. The more specific and genuine you can be, the stronger your application will feel.
4. Take advantage of opportunities to connect
Whether it’s attending virtual info sessions, speaking with admissions, or reaching out to current students, making those connections can provide valuable insight. These conversations, I think, would have helped me better understand the culture at Heller and given me more confidence in my decision to apply.
5. Don’t overthink it, focus on being authentic
It’s easy to get caught up in trying to craft the “perfect” application, but what ultimately matters is presenting a clear and honest picture of who you are and what you care about. Heller values students who are thoughtful, engaged, and committed to making an impact, and that comes across best when you’re genuine.
Overall, the application process was an important first step in my journey at Heller. While I would make small adjustments, like applying earlier, the experience helped me clarify my goals and ultimately led me to a program that has been both challenging and rewarding. For anyone considering applying, a thoughtful, early, and authentic approach will go a long way.
