This scholarship was created by Dr. Altman’s family, friends, colleagues and students to honor Dr. Stuart Altman, the Sol C. Chaikin Professor of National Health Policy. It is awarded to a master’s student in the aging or health concentration, and honors the life and work of Stuart Altman by supporting students whose career goals include making a difference in the field of health policy, health care management or aging policy management. The ideal candidate will be an MPP student.
After Anne Ralen Brown passed away in 1996, friends established the
Anne Ralen Brown Endowed Scholarship in her memory to support MPP or PhD students at the Heller School.
Established by Bernard ’63 and Sonja Lind in 2007,
this fund is awarded annually to a Brandeis undergraduate or Heller graduate student with preference to a student from Africa, preferably from the Republic of Ghana, or from one of the Eastern Caribbean States, preferably from the Commonwealth of Dominica.
The Barbara Wakefield Scholarship Endowment was created in memory of Barbara Wakefield, a beloved finance administrator committed to providing Heller students with financial assistance along with her tremendous personal support. It is awarded to a PhD student with preferred, but not required, interests in women and aging. Her family continues to receive letters from recipients and her husband, Mr. Joel Cohen, periodically attends the annual Heller Graduation Reception.
The Rodgers Endowed Scholarship was made possible by a generous gift from Charles, PhD’78, and Fran Rodgers. This scholarship is available for any Heller student enrolled in a full-time degree program. International candidates are preferred.
The Coexistence Endowed Fellowship was created in honor of the Dalai Lama’s visit in 1998 for one Tibetan and one Chinese student enrolled in the MA GSPM, or MS GHPM programs at the Heller School. This fellowship promotes the peaceful coexistence of these two communities in the world today.
The David F. Squire Endowed Scholarship was created in 2014 by David Squire, a Trustee Emeritus at Brandeis. It is awarded to an outstanding graduate student at the Masters or PhD level at the Heller School. This scholarship reflects Mr. Squire’s unwavering commitment to Brandeis University and the Heller School. He continues to be very involved with many colleagues on campus. He is a regular attendee at Heller events, including major event series and student capstone presentations. He is an emeritus member of the Brandeis Trustees and the Heller Board of Advisors.
The Eve and Herman Gelman Doctoral Fellowship for Social Policy was created in 2004 by Ellen Gelman’s estate in memory of her parents. Ellen received her B.A. in Psychology from Brandeis and went on to become an Associate Professor in the Department of Art at the University of Maryland at College Park. This fellowship is awarded to students in the PhD program.

The Frank and Theresa Caplan Endowed Fellowship in Early Childhood and Parenting Education was created in 1989 and provides support for full-time doctoral students whose professional interests are focused in parenting, children, youth and families and/or family policy. The primary objective of the fellowship is to prepare students for leadership roles in generating new research and using that knowledge to promote social change.
The Frieze Fellowship provides tuition assistance to a domestic minority student. The ideal candidate will be a domestic or minority student in the MA GSPM, MS GHPM or MPP program.
The Gerben DeJong and Janice DeJong Endowed Fellowship Fund was established by Gerben and Janice DeJong in 2017 for students of any program with an interest in disability, health, or income maintenance policy.
The Dr. Gloria Holmes and Dr. May H. Futrell Endowed Fellowship in Health Policy was funded in 2013 by Heller alumna May H. Futrell, PhD'76, to support domestic Heller doctoral students whose focus is health policy or another social justice concentration.
The Gorbach Family Endowed Fellowship was created by Judith ’58 and Sherwood Gorbach ’55 for students with a concentration in CYF or health and/or who demonstrate values aligning with those of the greater Jewish community.
Dr. Gustav (Gus) Ranis ’52 was part of Brandeis’ first graduating class and also served as its valedictorian, alongside the first commencement speaker, former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. A leading economist and author, he became a professor at Yale University. His international expertise brought him to be an economic advisor to the President of Ghana and serve as a consultant to many organizations.
Herman Kerner's family and friends established the
Herman F. Kerner Memorial Scholarship Endowment after he died in 2005 to honor his life and philanthropy. The fund supports PhD graduate students at the Heller School who are studying problems related to poverty, assets and/or aging.
The Hon. Jonathan Brant Fellowship Fund was created by Dr. Renee Brant in memory of Judge Jonathan Brant ’68, a Brandeis alumnus and Cambridge, Mass. District Court judge who was an indefatigable advocate for people with disabilities. Intended for doctoral students affiliated with the Lurie Institute, the Brant Fellowship will provide tuition and other financial assistance to support their dissertations and policy advocacy.
The I. Bruce Gordon Family Endowment is awarded to outstanding Heller students in the MPP or PhD program concentrating in health policy or child, youth and family policy and contemplating a career in either of these fields. The scholarship was made possible by a generous gift from Dr. I. Bruce Gordon ‘59.
Dr. Jack Shonkoff was Dean of the Heller School and the Samuel F. and Rose B. Gingold Professor of Human Development and Social Policy at Brandeis from 1994 until 2005. Faculty, alumni, staff, friends, and admirers of Dr. Shonkoff’s work in child, youth, and family social policy, established the
Jack Shonkoff Fellowship in Child and Family Policy in 2005 for PhD students.
Abby Blume Brown, PhD’72, created
this scholarship endowment in 1999. The intent of the scholarship is to support minority women who are planning management or service careers in community-based, human services organizations. The ideal candidate will be an MPP student concentrating in children, youth and families, health care, aging, or sustainable development.
The Judith Krieger Gardner Memorial Endowment was created by Judy's parents, Bernard and Sylvia Krieger, in 1996 for PhD students. Her career was dedicated to finding support for families and children. She possessed an enduring passion for the health and well-being of children, and a deep respect for the challenges parents face in contemporary American society.
Josephine Winkleman established the
Leon G. Winkelman Endowed Fellowship in 1959 in memory of her husband, Leon G. Winkelman, to aid PhD students at the Heller School with preference for students specializing in gerontology, aging or in health. This is one of the oldest fellowships at Brandeis University.
The Marjorie S. Trotter Doctoral Fellowship was created in 2014 by Jonathan G. ’75 and Margot Trotter Davis, PhD’08. The fund is intended to provide stipend assistance to select fourth year PhD students at the Heller School of Social Policy & Management conducting rigorous research required to complete their doctoral dissertations.
This scholarship in memory of Mary Jagoda ’05, who died while an undergraduate at Brandeis, was made possible through a generous gift from her parents. Women who attended Brandeis as undergraduates are preferable.
The Morris G. and J. Josephine Ward Fellowship was established in June 2021 by Roberta Ward Walsh, PhD’89, in memory of her parents, to support PhD students studying aspects of economic and racial equity at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. She is also a current Heller Alumni Association Board member.
The NGF scholarship is for any Heller student focused on social justice. An interest in the Jewish community is preferred but not required.
The Oskowitz Endowed Scholarship was created in 2003 by Laura and Selwyn Oskowitz to support PhD students at the Heller School, studying, but not limited to, a health concentration. Mrs. Oskowitz was actively involved in a number of civic and philanthropic organizations, with service on multiple boards, including the Heller Board of Advisors. Dr. Selwyn Oskowitz is a reproductive endocrinologist who emigrated to the United States in 1975 from South Africa.
The Sillerman Fellows are doctoral students who wish to pursue dissertations in the area of social justice philanthropy. Stipends may be awarded to entering PhD students and to third year students. Dissertation awards are also available to students with accepted proposals that include a strong focus on philanthropy.
The Sol Chick and Rosalind B. Chaikin Endowed Fellowship is awarded to a doctoral student whose research and study is in the area of children and families. The primary objective of the fellowship is to support students committed to research and policy on behalf of families and children. Chaikin Fellows are those dedicated to addressing the challenges facing children and youth in our society.
The Wyatt Jones Endowed Scholarship was created in 2003 in memory of longtime Heller professor Dr. Wyatt Jones who had a lasting and positive impact on all of his students. This fellowship supports minority PhD graduate students at Heller.
