On Campus Study Spots

April 30, 2026

Margot Mental HeadshotIt’s an average day at the Heller School, and you have three classes: two in the morning, and one in the late afternoon, giving you some nice downtime, but not quite enough time to go home. Luckily, there are several on-campus study spots that I frequent, whether solo or with a group!

1. The Library: this one is the most obvious, but the library is one of my favorite study spots. Unlike a traditional college library, the Goldfarb Library gets quieter as you move down the levels, rather than quieter as you go up. Go all the way to the bottom floor if you want complete silence, or move up to the first floor for some background noise. I enjoy the Farber Mezzanine, which is above the Starbucks; it gives the perfect blend of cozy vibes and productivity for me to get my work done. You can even browse the stacks if you need a break, or grab a coffee to fuel your study session.

2. The Gertstenzang Grad Lounge: located in the science complex, the grad lounge provides a laid-back, casual atmosphere. There is a small kitchen (usually stocked with snacks!) where you can heat up your lunch before studying or heading back to class. Tea is also provided if you need a little pick-me-up, and there is usually a pot of coffee brewing. If you need a break before diving back into work, there is a TV and some games. Besides these amenities, there is a conference table (perfect for group projects!), sofas, and computers if you like to work on a dual-screen or if yours is in need of a charge. This can be a bit of a louder space, and is ideal for those who like some chatter and conversation with friends while checking items off their to-do lists.

3. Heller School Breakout Rooms: on the ground floor of the Heller-Schneider building, there are several breakout rooms (first come first serve!) that students can utilize. These provide a quiet, private space, either for taking classes online, holding meetings, or working with friends. Each room features chargers and a TV, so you can see your work on the “big screen.” Plus, Heller has microwaves and vending machines, making this the perfect hangout spot if you need to eat some lunch and recharge in a quieter space.

4. Humanities Quad: never underestimate an empty classroom. The Mandel Center for Humanities quad has several large classrooms that make the perfect study space. I personally like to utilize the whiteboards in classrooms, especially if I have to draw graphs or if it helps for memorization. The quiet, larger space can help with focus and productivity if you feel unmotivated. Plus, there are chargers, a necessity when all your work is on your laptop.

5. The Great Outdoors: while this is a better study spot in the warmer months, I am a fan of working outside. Brandeis has several open greenspaces, such as Chapels Field and Fellows Garden. Some spots even have adirondack chairs or benches if you don’t like sitting directly on the grass. The warm sun and slight buzz of activity all around make it the perfect opportunity to open a book (and notebook), lay out a blanket, and study while reconnecting with nature.

What I like the most about these study spaces is that they are close to the Heller School! Each is within a five minute walk of the Heller School, and are close to either a source of coffee or food to get that much-needed pick-me-up. There is something for everyone, whether you prefer a space with conversation or solitude.
