Nonprofit Management

Gain mission-driven management skills at a top-ranked graduate school of social policy and management

This concentration is designed for students who believe in the power of mission-driven nonprofit organizations to effect positive, sustainable social change. To complement their core MBA training, nonprofit management concentrators take additional courses that sharpen their skills in leadership, fundraising and budgeting, social entrepreneurship and managing a triple bottom line. Heller has trained students in mission-driven management for over 40 years, and our faculty bring their first-hand expertise into the classroom and curriculum.

Students in this concentration engage in rigorous coursework and pursue career-building opportunities through internships, fellowships, and team consulting projects, putting them in an immediate position to take their careers to the next level. Graduates of the nonprofit management concentration are prepared to lead across a range of settings, including community-level grassroots organizations, cultural organizations, advocacy groups, foundations and philanthropy, social enterprises and large nonprofits such as hospitals and universities.

Concentration Chair: Michael Appell, MA’79

“In the nonprofit management concentration, MBA faculty have designed electives and selected case studies to have an explicit focus on the unique challenges and dilemmas leaders face in the nonprofit world. In addition to this rich curriculum, we frequently welcome prominent leaders from the local nonprofit community into the classroom as guest speakers.”
