Civic Engagement

Civic engagement is at the heart of what The Segal Program, our Fellows, and our larger Network are about as citizen leaders. We emphasize the importance of civic engagement in our curriculum and our Program offerings and are inspired by the active role our Fellows take in their communities across the country and the world.

With a gift from Heller Alumna Mady Chalk (PhD ’90), we’ve expanded The Segal Program's focus on civic and political engagement. Inaugural Chalk Research Associate Maxwell Hunsinger, a Brandeis Senior, conducted research in the summer of 2019 on “Promising Practices in Youth Civic and Political Engagement.” The paper was shared with Fellows and the higher education service learning community and is available to all below.

Our 2019-2020 Chalk Research & Management Associate, Heller Student Victoria Fils-Aime, helped us pilot a community of practice for politically-engaged Fellows that was kicked off in March 2020. Moving forward, Segal Program Director Susie Flug-Silva is partnering with Fellows to support Fellow-facilitated CoPs through the November 2020 election. Our May CoP, facilitated by Segal Fellow Leila Quinn, was on building understanding across political differences.
