The Center for Global Development and Sustainability

Cyber Innovation and Livelihood Security

Our world has become technologically connected with cyber and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
systems at the center of our social and economic activities. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) states that cyber technologies and AI are the new drivers of growth and development of our time. Although these technologies offer several advantages, Forbes posits that these systems threaten livelihood security by facilitating capabilities that malicious actors could abuse. The disparity in knowledge, access, and utilization of cyber and AI resources is becoming a major social and economic differentiator. Working in collaboration with regional partners, we seek to further apply exploratory policy research to understand the evolution, adaptation, and resilience policies that could be employed to ensure sustainable cyber and AI economic and livelihood
security.
In April 2025, the Sustainability, Resilience, and Cyber Innovation Division of GDS hosted the
first Brandeis Global Cyber Security Conference with the theme, Livelihood Security in an Era of Cyber insecurity and AI. This conference, chaired by Professor Joseph Assan, attracted over 120 delegates from academia, policy institutions, Nonprofits, and research institutes in Africa, Asia, and the United States.
