AmeriCorps and Peace Corps

“Shirley Chisholm said, ‘Service is the rent you pay to live on earth.' I want to support communities that are disenfranchised, under-resourced, taken advantage of—the people experiencing cyclical poverty and hunger. We have come too far for people to still suffer from things they don’t have to.”

Peace Corps

There's a huge Peace Corps community here [at Heller]. If you walk anywhere on campus, you'll notice everyone is either Peace Corps or AmeriCorps or City Year, which is a really nice community to have. The fact that we are service driven is obvious in every classroom and I really love that part about Heller.

Joel Pugh, MBA'20

AmeriCorps

“I did two terms of AmeriCorps, and I absolutely loved it. It completely changed my life,” says Pugh. “It was my first job, and I got to meet people who were different from me, which was a big deal having growing up in this very rural, shut-off part of the country. It taught me about myself, about other people, about intersectionality. That experience instilled a sense of social justice in me.”

Charlie Stoever, MBA'22

Peace Corps

“I want to empower people, especially LGBTQ folks, people of color, to dive into finance and learn about financial literacy. When COVID caused the stock market to dive, people like me who were financially literate could take advantage of lower-priced stocks, while millions were applying for unemployment.”
