For Biniyam Abebe, the Global Health Policy and Management program at Heller is the next step in a career dedicated to serving his community. Biniyam’s road to Heller started in Ethiopia, where he learned firsthand the need for a more just health care system as a medical doctor. “When you come from a low-income country and witness the devastating consequences of unfairness in health care systems, you understand the impact policymakers have,” says Biniyam, who managed the internal medicine COVID-19 treatment center in the remote city of Dire Dawa. In addition to his work as a general practitioner, Biniyam served as a lecturer at Madda Walabu University, where he shared his vision for equity in health care with students, managed community intervention programs, and led health education campaigns to raise awareness about maternal and pediatric health.

Biniyam knew that furthering his knowledge of health care systems and policies would equip him with the skills necessary to effect real change in his community. He chose Heller for its strong focus on social justice and evidence-based policies. Biniyam says that gaining a comprehensive understanding of the structures in place that impact health care has been an essential piece of the puzzle. Not only has he learned about how the system operates, he has been able to dive into new aspects of policy, like health economics: “Heller has created this environment where you can challenge yourself, approach your professors for support, and ultimately become a better version of yourself.”

After graduation, Biniyam plans to apply his clinical experience and Heller knowledge to address the gap in the Ethiopian health care system in a way that benefits as many people as possible. “I want to create more equitable, efficient, and sustainable health care access for underserved and marginalized people,” says Biniyam. “In order to make those changes, you have to start with policy.”

His advice for prospective students is to know what you’re passionate about and who you want to help: “It doesn’t matter where you’re from—it’s what you want to do that matters. If your goal is to advance social justice and advocate for health equity, Heller is the best place for you.”
