Career Development Plan
Program Description:
Career Academy is an optional distance summer program intended for incoming first year students but open to all. All newly admitted students to the Heller School's degree programs receive invitations on June 1 in advance of their August matriculation. The program lasts eight weeks and consists of seven modules. The program rationale is to have incoming students begin exploring their career options early. Students can expect to undergo a quality career assessment, receive training on our on-line recruiting system, create a Heller Resume and have it reviewed, review employment reports, join relevant LinkedIn groups and career discussions; in short to be on top of their career game upon arrival at Heller.
Modules:
Week 1:
A career assessment and exploration exercise;Week 2:
Training on HellerCareerConnect.com, our on-line recruiting system;Weeks 3-6:
Building a Heller Resume and uploading Draft 1 to CareerConnect; receiving a reviewed resume back from a career advisor; uploading Draft 2;Week 4-6:
Reviewing the program-specific Career Curriculum and the program-specific Heller Employment Data.Week 7:
Creating or updating a LinkedIn account, including it in the CareerConnect profile, receiving guidance on locating and joining relevant LinkedIn Groups;Week 8:
Writing a "Thirty Second Commercial", scheduling a first appointment with a career advisor, slotting the resume for a "dummy job" in CareerConnect;Late August:
Optional: slotting the resume for a part-time Fall semester internship preparation for the Heller Project Fair in early September. How It Works:
Each week a new topic will be introduced on a Tuesday morning with an assignment to be submitted the following Monday at midnight. A discussion board is opened and guidance is provided to assist students with completion of the assignment. A reminder goes out each week on Friday to help students keep track of upcoming issues and submission deadlines.
