The Role of the States in Health Reform: Past Lessons and Future Hope National health reform is--and will continue to be--a moving target. But it is clear that states will be key actors as well as being significantly impacted by the legislation. This session will highlight the major health insurance reforms being discussed in Washington, with an emphasis on the importance of state Medicaid programs in expanding eligibility. While insurance reform needs to occur on a national basis, this expert panel (who come from different areas of the country) will discuss the likelihood and potential for states to take the lead in bringing the growth in health care costs under control.

ATUL GAWANDE Dr. Gawande is a general and endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. He served as senior health policy advisor to the Clinton White House and is currently director of the World Health Organization's global campaign to reduce surgical deaths. Dr. Gawande is also a frequent contributor to The New Yorker magazine. |

The audience will help analyze these partnerships and discuss how they can be improved and expanded.
