Interim Dean Madison, distinguished faculty and staff at the Heller School, fellow graduates, family, and friends present here today. It is an honor to stand before you today to deliver this speech on behalf of the Global Health Policy and Management class of 2023.
Today marks the culmination of our academic journey at the Heller School, and it is a testament to our hard work and dedication. It seems like only yesterday we were at orientation, excited to begin our graduate education at this prestigious institution. And now, here we are, ready to embark on the next chapter of our lives. As the saying goes, “a smooth sea does not make skillful sailors,” and our struggles and challenges have made us stronger and better prepared for the future. We have gained valuable skills and knowledge that will serve us well as we face the challenges ahead.
Our cohort is unique and diverse, with students from 15 countries in Africa, Asia, and North America. Our diverse backgrounds and experiences have enriched our education, and we have formed meaningful connections that will last a lifetime. I have been constantly inspired by the support and collaboration I have seen among my colleagues, not just in academic work, but in all areas of life. Let us continue to collaborate and work together to make a positive impact on the world. As I read the book “The Go-Giver” by Bob Burg and John David Mann, I was reminded of the importance of adding value to the lives of others – "Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment." As we move forward into the next phase of our lives, whatever path we choose, let us strive to add value to the lives of others.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the faculty at the Heller School for their unwavering support and guidance. You have imparted valuable knowledge and skills that will be put to good use. Whether we pursue careers in health policy, health care data analytics, health care consulting, project management, health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), clinical medicine, or clinical research, although some of us may choose to pursue careers in politics, let us never forget the importance of social justice, inclusivity, and advocating for the inclusion of all groups.
Finally, to my fellow graduates, I want to offer my heartfelt congratulations. As we leave the Heller School, let us remember the training we have received, the lessons we have learned, and the bonds we have formed. I wish you all the success in your future endeavors. Go forth and take charge, knowing that you are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to make a positive impact on the world.
