Community Message: Dean Weil nominated to serve in the Biden administration

June 03, 2021

Dear Heller Community,

I am writing to share that I have been nominated by President Biden to serve as the next Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division in the U.S. Department of Labor. I had the privilege of serving in that same role under President Obama from 2014 to 2017, and it is with great honor that I have accepted the opportunity to serve this new administration under the leadership of President Biden and Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh.

The position I have been nominated for requires U.S. Senate confirmation which is a complex and often months-long process, so this message is not a goodbye. I will remain dean of the Heller School until my appointment is confirmed by the Senate, and I intend to continue leading all of our strategic initiatives through the summer and likely into the fall.

I have spoken with university leadership about a potential transition, and we are developing contingency plans together so that the school will be prepared. I remain deeply committed to the success of the Heller School, including to a careful transition of leadership. I will keep the community at Heller and Brandeis informed of this process moving forward.

I have said before that the only reason I would consider leaving Heller would be if I received a call from the White House, and despite the challenges of this year, that sentiment remains true. Working as a part of this amazing community is an honor and I am extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished since I arrived in 2017.

Over this last, most difficult year in particular, I have witnessed extraordinary collaboration, resilience, dedication and leadership in every team and at all levels of our school. I look forward to all the great work we will accomplish in the months to come.

Sincerely,

David Weil

Dean and Professor
