Mursal Manati is a visiting scholar from Afghanistan at Brandeis University - Heller School for Social Policy and Management. Ms. Manati is a Pharm-D and MSc in Food, Nutrition, and Dietetics. Ms. Manati worked at the decision-making and leadership level in the different organizations in Afghanistan. Before she was director of the Public Nutrition Directorate (PND) at the Ministry of Public Health in Afghanistan (2.5-year term), she was Director of the Specialists’ Directorate at AAEHC for 5 years. She coordinated all nutrition programs and activities with national and international partners in Afghanistan. Ms. Manati was an active member of Afghanistan’s Food Security and Nutrition Agenda which was led by the vice president’s office. Ms. Manati was an essential author of the development, revision, and strategy of policies concerning Non-communicable Diseases, Health policies and Strategy, Nutrition for Behaviors Changes Strategy, Maternal Infant and Young Children Nutrition, Integrated Management of Malnutrition, Chemical-Biological-Radiological and Nuclear committee, Nuclear and Radiological materials waste management guidelines.

Profile

Ms. Manati established Hospital Nutrition Units in the two hospitals to introduce Medical Nutrition Therapy with the technical and financial aid of the EU’s nutrition projects. Ms. Manati established the E-Learning Center of PND for providing different nutrition course certificates as distance education forms with the technical and financial assistance of USAID’s nutrition projects. Ms. Manati taught the nutrition one-year diploma courses at Kabul Medical University and Ghazanfer Institute for Health Science. She organized training programs for different government and non-government agencies. In addition, Ms. Manati was a civil activist for social injustice and women's rights. Ms. Manati was fired by the Taliban because she was the only female director in the ministry of public health.
