Dear Heller Community,

As President Liebowitz shared in his message Friday, the start of the semester is underway with over 400 undergraduates moved in and hundreds more joining this week. The campus COVID-19 testing program is also in full swing, with the Admissions testing site open and the Heller testing site beginning its pilot on Wednesday. We are taking a cautious approach to ramping up activity on campus, with an extended move-in period for undergraduates and a thoughtful phasing-in of the testing program.

I understand the concern some of you voiced about respectfully enforcing new safety protocols (masks, testing, daily health assessment, etc.), especially given the increased foot traffic in the Heller building. For this reason I have decided to pause reentry requests to the Heller building for office and study use until we can implement a complete process to ensure that community members who access Heller for work or study have completed the necessary protocols and received permission to do so. Having this process in place will allow for more effective contact tracing, reduce the risk to those who truly need to work on site, and ensure the safety of our Brandeis and Waltham communities. I anticipate we will be ready to accommodate space use requests within two weeks.

Thank you for your patience—it is critical that we get this right.

Sincerely,

David Weil
Dean and Professor
