HS 130A — Comparisons of Antisemitism, Racism, and Caste

[ djw ]

Explores comparisons and contrasts of different forms of social exclusion, oppression, and marginalization. We will examine the othering of and structural violence against specific historical groups in the West and the Global South/East. Initially in the course, we will travel across history, but specific attention will be given to the last two centuries. Without conflating histories of antisemitism, racism, particularly the legacies of Black slavery and indigenous genocide in the West from the colonial to postcolonial periods, and caste in South Asia and the global diaspora, we will examine, philosophically and sociologically, the nature and forms of social and systemic exclusion.
