Karen Alfaro, PhD studentOne of my favorite lunch spots is a place called Juanita’s Kitchen, located on the corner of Newton and Taylor. It’s hard to miss with its bright blue exterior and cheerful splash of yellow around the windows. Juanita’s is a family-run Salvadoran and Mexican restaurant, and the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warmth and vibrant cultural decor that feels like home. Being Salvadoran, the food reminds me of the home-cooked meals I grew up with, meals I truly miss and don’t get to enjoy as often anymore. The pupusas are especially delicious, and to be honest, that’s hard to come by… or maybe I’m just picky! I always love to pair my meal with a glass of Jamaica, it’s probably one of my favorite drinks. Refreshing, slightly tart, and perfectly sweet, it rounds out the meal beautifully. Juanita’s also offers pickup and delivery, which makes it super convenient when I’m craving something comforting and flavorful but don’t have time to dine in.

Another spot I really enjoy is Ponzu Izakaya, a cozy Japanese restaurant located on Moody Street. The staff are always warm and attentive, which makes every visit feel welcoming. While I usually order takeout, I recently decided to dine in for the first time. The ambiance was calm and relaxing, with soft lighting, a soothing water fountain feature, and a TV quietly playing in the background for a touch of casual entertainment. The menu at Ponzu is impressive, with a wide variety of dishes that cater to both adventurous eaters and comfort food lovers. I like to switch it up and try something new each time I visit. One of my favorite things to do is go with the chef’s pick, it’s like a mini surprise, and each time it’s been an absolute hit: fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated. Whether I’m craving sushi or small plates to share, Ponzu always delivers. It's become one of my go-to spots when I want something delicious and comforting after a long day.

I don’t normally eat on campus because of my schedule, but when I do, I usually stick to the same on-the-go poke bowl. I’ve heard great things about the cafeteria and the variety of options it offers, but I tend to gravitate toward something quick and convenient. Since I’m usually rushing between classes or meetings, the poke bowl is my go-to—it’s fast, satisfying, and easy to eat on the move.
