Admissions: Financial Aid

SID awards tuition assistance on the basis of need and merit. SID does not offer financial assistance for living expenses except in the case of the fellowships detailed on the Scholarships page. To apply for a tuition scholarship, applicants should reply fully to the Financial Aid section of the Application Form. No separate financial aid form is necessary.

If you are a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident and would like to apply for a loan, you should fill out the online FAFSA form by early spring, using the Brandeis code of 002133. You may download the form from their website at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov, complete it electronically, call 1-800-801-0576 or contact HellerAid@Brandeis.edu for assisstance.

1. Federal Direct Stafford Loan applicants must complete the following:

Upon receipt of these documents, the Heller Financial Aid Office will notify the student regarding the aid for which he/she is eligible.  Students may be asked to provide additional documentation to the Heller Financial Aid Office to support their application, including tax returns, documentation of citizenship or permanent resident status, or social security information.

Interest is not charged on a Stafford subsidized loan while the borrower is enrolled in school at least half-time. The maximum subsidized award per academic year is $8,500. Interest on the unsubsidized Stafford loan begins to accrue once money is applied to the borrower’s student account. The maximum aggregate subsidized and unsubsidized loan award is $20,500.

2. Perkins Loan
Perkins Loans are available on a limited basis to students who demonstrate significant financial need. They are low-interest, fixed rate (5%) student loans provided by Brandeis and the federal government. To be considered, applicants need to complete the FAFSA application (see instructions above) and contact the Heller Financial Aid Office of Brandeis University at 781-736-3801 after receiving a response from FAFSA. Perkins loans may only be taken after Stafford loan possibilities are exhausted.

3. Other Loans
Information about private educational loans can be obtained from the Admissions Office. Students may apply for these loans with or without a co-signer and must pass an independent credit review.

Refund Information
Refund check are issued by the University Office of Student Financial Services. Loans are applied directly to a student's university account, and upon completion of the Brandeis Credit Release Form. Students must be registered and Promissory Notes signed to process a refund.  Refund checks should not be expected until 10 days before the first day of instruction each semester.

Resource & Fund Information
Conduct research in your home country.  Look for any possible funding from local government, corporate, or foundation sources. Spend some time doing internet searches for scholarship and loan sources.  Search by country of origin and discipline.
