The guest speakers were Rosalie Edes, the Assistant Secretary for Disability Policy of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services, and State Representatives Denise Garlick and Tom Sannicandro, also a Heller PhD student and Lurie Fellow.

The Lurie Institute co-sponsored a “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign along with the Waltham Group, the undergraduate community service organization. Organized by Lurie Fellow Leah Igdalsky ʼ14, the campaign encouraged people to pledge to end using the “r-word.” A week in March 2014 of encouraging people to sign to end use of the word culminated in a short film festival and remarks from Lurie Fellow, PhD student and State Representative Tom Sannicandro and self-advocates.
