Reduction of Mosquito-Borne Diseases Through Non-Pesticide Screening of Schools and Randomized Houses

Prof. SimonLaurence Simon, PhD, Principal Investigator, is Professor of International Development at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Chair of the Heller School’s PhD concentration in Global Development and Sustainability and directs the Center for Global Development and Sustainability. He came to Brandeis after a long career in development organizations.


Professor VinyaVinya Ariyaratne, MD, MPH, Co-PI, Dr Ariyaratne is General Secretary of Sarvodaya, the largest NGO in Sri Lanka and a specialist in community medicine. Under his direction, Sarvodaya managed most international assistance to Sri Lanka from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Dr Ariyaratne manages the full implementation of the Screening project in Sri Lanka.


Professor MalabikaMalabika Sarker, MD, MPH, PhD, Professor & Director of Research, James P Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dr Sarker is a renowned specialist on reproductive health, monitoring & evaluation, and research methodology.



Dr. TisseraHasitha A. Tissera, MBBS, MSc, MD, Co-PI is the Head, National Dengue Control Programme, Epidemiology Unit, Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. Dr Tissera is involved in planning and implementing all dengue control activities at national and sub-national levels. Prior to joining the Ministry of Health, he served as Regional Epidemiologist in the then war-torn Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.


Prof. ShepardDon Shepard, PhD, is Professor of Public Health at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management, is a highly sought after expert on cost effectiveness studies for the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and other major agencies and foundations. He is currently conducting research into the disease burden of Dengue Fever.


Prof. AssanJoseph Assan, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Political Economy of Sustainable Development at Brandeis University’s Heller School of Social Policy and Management with long experience managing and evaluating development programs in Africa and Asia.





Prof. DianaDiana Bowser, DSc, is Assistant Professor of Global Health at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management and is an expert in evaluation of health programs.




Prof. NandaA.K. Nandakumar, PhD, is Professor of Health Policy at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management. He also serves as Chief Economist for the Health Policy Bureau of the United States Agency for International Development.




Naeem SaleemNaeem Saleem, MD, is a pulmonologist with an extensive experience in the field of public health. He has worked with public organizations, UN, World Bank and Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Dr Naeem has presented more than twenty five papers at International Conferences around the globe and has many peer-reviewed publications. He is also a reviewer for a number of academic journals. Currently, as a Fulbright scholar, Dr Naeem is about to finish his PhD in Global Health and Development at Brandeis University.


Aaron SimonAaron Simon, MA'07, is on the senior staff of the Seva Foundation which has deep experience in health technology transfer and training to poor nations.





Sultan M ZakariaSultan Mohammed Zakaria Mazumder, MA'16, is a staff Research Assistant at the iLab of the Center for Global Development and Sustainability at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management.



Pesticide-free Storage of Durable Grains

ShlomoShlomo Navarro, PhD, Research Entomologist, CEO of Green Storage, Ltd., Israel. Professor Shlomo Navarro is the principal inventor of hermetic technologies for the storage durable grains. Until his recent retirement he was a Principal Scientist in the Department of Food Science, Israel Agricultural Research Organization (ARO), Volcani Center, Bet Dagan. Professor Navarro is a worldwide expert in the post harvest protection of durable commodities with specific emphasis on insect control and storage engineering technology. His Handbook titled Aeration of Grain in subtropical Climates for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations is the leading authority for aeration in tropical and sub-tropical grain stores and was the forerunner of the book The Mechanics and Physics of Modern Grain Aeration Management published by CRC Press in 2002. He has authored or co-authored 302 technical articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings, and books. He holds 6 Patents on developing storage structures and technologies.


Prof. SimonLaurence Simon, PhD, is Professor of International Development at Brandeis University’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Chair of the Heller School’s PhD concentration in Global Development and Sustainability and directs the Center for Global Development and Sustainability. He is the founder of GrainPro, Inc., and has worked on adaptations of hermetic storage throughout the world.
