Sukhadeo Thorat, Indian social activist and champion of human rights for marginalized peoples, is founder of the Indian Institute for Dalit Studies and chairman, Indian Council for Social Science Research. He is an economist and was the former chairman of the University Grants Commission. Professor Thorat rose from a situation of poverty, caste discrimination, and miseries in a small village in India and through constant struggle and with a sense of dedication used his writings and social actions for the last 40 years for positive change for the cause of deprived sections in Indian society. He is now a major leader of higher education and a tireless fighter against caste and religious discrimination.
