HS 413F — Introduction to Demography for Policy Planning, Implementation and Evaluation

Meets for one-half semester and yields half-course credit.

Provides PhD students across all concentrations with an understanding of core concepts, analytical methods, and social consequences of population dynamics. The module will apply these to thematic and policy areas from domestic to global including health, aging, disability, poverty, and inequality. Students will analyze demographic data within specific populations such as children and youth, family, migrants and immigrants, racial and ethnic minorities, and as they reflect or challenge existing social structures and norms including class and caste, upward mobility, occupational preferences, and social security. Every week of the course, comparisons will be made between United States data (national and state) and an overseas country (especially Japan, Germany, China, India). Usually offered every year.
