We are delighted to welcome you to the Master's Program in Coexistence and Conflict at the Heller School, which operates as a close-knit family in a warm and intellectually stimulating environment where learning and success is our first goal. Our mission is to enhance the capabilities of students to promote coexistence through their work in governmental and non-governmental institutions and provide them with the professional skills to design and implement successful interventions that enable groups, nations and regions to embrace coexistence values.
Students from around the world join us to master the fundamentals of peacebuilding and conflict resolution. Courses, fieldwork and events prepare them for a lifelong career to promote coexistence values as responsible leaders and facilitators in conflict transformation.
Faculty are leading experts in conflict theory and intervention. As researchers and practitioners, they provide students with a unique blend of cutting-edge knowledge and know-how that our graduates apply to prevent, mitigate, and resolve violent conflicts.
Students spend three months in the field integrated in peacebuilding organizations (NGO, government or international agency) or conducting independent research. Upon return to Boston, they share their findings at a capstone with faculty, fellow students, alumni and partners.
The Master's Coex Program Offers
- A solid grounding in contemporary and developing theories on the causes of intercommunal conflicts, from the local to the global.
- Emphasis on the skills needed to design strategic interventions that prevent, mitigate or resolve intercommunal conflicts and violence.
- A focus on mainstreaming coexistence and conflict knowledge and skills within governments and international and inter-governmental organizations.
- A wide choice of electives, including language courses that are relevant to participants' career interests.
- A master's field project in an area of conflict or with an organization involved in coexistence and conflict interventions.
- Dialogue and mediation skills designed for work in intercommunal conflict situations.
- Evaluation skills to help assess the success of conflict interventions.
- Partnership skills in delivering coexistence work through democracy, security, legislative, mediative, human rights, political, equity and development work.
