Career Development FAQs

What career development services do you provide?

From before a student arrives at Heller, they have an opportunity to begin to develop a strong, concise resume, cover letter and career strategy.  We provide a career orientation during the first week to ensure all students understand how to take advantage of all of the career resources available.  Our services include a comprehensive career curriculum that is customized to each student’s degree program. The curriculum includes workshops, colloquia and seminars on career self-assessment; job search skills; branding and networking; resumes and cover letters; and interview practice. We offer these same services to Heller alumni.

What kinds of field experience do students undertake while at Heller?

Heller students work all around the globe doing internships, practicums, and field projects. You will find Heller students performing policy analysis at the Health Policy Commission in Boston, examining food security for Catholic Relief Services in Madagascar, doing monitoring and evaluation for Plan International in Washington, and working on trafficking issues for the International Organization for Migration in China. Visit Experiential Learning to learn more.

What career assistance do you provide to help students find internships, research opportunities, and fieldwork?

We have dedicated staff to help students connect to practicums, Team Consulting Projects and internship resources.  See the variety of places students have had experiential learning opportunities by visiting the Experiential Learning page.

Is funding available for fieldwork?

The career office can help students identify resources for funding. Some fieldwork assignments are paid, some are unpaid. Some have a small stipend for living expenses and/or travel as well as a salary.

What kind of jobs do Heller graduates land?

Heller alumni are making meaningful contributions to the workplace in every corner of the world. To see the kind of careers that Heller graduates pursue at organizations such as Oxfam, World Bank, MercyCorps, BSR, Search for Common Ground, UN, or in their own entrepreneurial start-ups, see our employment info and read our Alumni Profiles.

As a student, can I connect with Heller alumni for advice on fieldwork and career opportunities?

Yes! Heller has an active alumni network and we provide many opportunities to connect current students with Heller graduates from the same program. Alumni help students with course selection, insider industry information, resume review, and personal job search experience.

Does the Career Development Center help with on-campus jobs?

Yes, we can connect you to resources to help identify and apply for on campus jobs.  Whether you are interested in being a TA, a Graduate Assistant, or just trying to find something to help pay the bills, we can work with you to identify options.

Are your services available to me after I graduate?

Yes! Once a student becomes a Heller alum, s/he has access to the Career Development Center for life.
