External Funding Sources
The following is a list of possible sources of external funding resources for graduate students and researchers. The Heller School does not award any of these scholarships or grants. This list is presented for informational purposes - it is the responsibility of each applicant to investigate and apply to each funding agency.
As we become aware of other opportunities, we will add them to this page.
American Association of University Women
One of the world's largest sources of funding, offering a variety of fellowships to both international and American female graduate students.
American College of Healthcare Executives
Offered annually, the Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship is designated for minority students enrolled in their final year of a healthcare management graduate program. Each scholarship is for $3,500, and the number of scholarships awarded varies from year to year. A maximum of one $3,500 scholarship is awarded per candidate selected.
Applications are accepted each year between January 1 and March 31. Students selected to receive a scholarship are notified in July.
Offered annually, the Foster G. McGaw Graduate Student Scholarship is designated for students enrolled in their final year of a healthcare management graduate program. Each scholarship is for $3,500, and the number of scholarships awarded varies from year to year. A maximum of one $3,500 scholarship is awarded per candidate selected.
Applications are accepted each year between January 1 and March 31. Students selected to receive a scholarship are notified in July.

Government Finance Officers Association Scholarships
- Daniel B. Goldberg Scholarship
The Daniel B. Goldberg Scholarship of $10,000 is available for award to a graduate student who is enrolled in full-time master's study preparing for a career in state and local government finance. This scholarship is funded by the Girard Miller Foundation. The winner of the scholarship is invited, as our guest, to attend the Government Finance Officers Association's annual conference, where the award is presented.
- Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship
The Government Finance Officers Association's Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship of $3,500 is available for award to one or more undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in full-time study preparing for a career in state and local government finance. The winner of the Government Accounting Scholarship is invited to attend the Government Finance Officers Association's annual conference, where the award will be presented.
- George A. Nielsen Public Investor Scholarship
The Public Investor Scholarship of $5,000 (may be two awards of $2,500 each) is available for award to an employee of a local government or other public entity who is enrolled or plans to enroll in an undergraduate or graduate program in public administration, finance, business administration, or related field. The purpose of the Public Investor Scholarship is to support the studies of full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate students with career interests in the efficient and productive investment of public fund
- Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship
The GFOA's Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship of $5,000 is available for award to an upper-division undergraduate or graduate student of public administration, (governmental) accounting, finance, political science, economics, or business administration (with a specific focus on government or nonprofit management). The purpose of the Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship is to recognize outstanding performance by minority students preparing for careers in state and local government finance.
- Public Employee Retirement Research and Administration Scholarship
The Public Employee Retirement Research and Administration Scholarship of $4,000 is available for award to a graduate student in public administration, finance, business administration, or social sciences. This GFOA scholarship is funded by the ICMA Retirement Corporation. The purpose of the Public Employee Retirement Research and Administration Scholarship is to support the studies of a full- or part-time graduate student preparing for a career in the field of public-sector retirement benefits.

National Academy of Public Administration - The Herbert Roback Scholarship
The National Academy of Public Administration invites nominations each year for the Herbert Roback Scholarship of $7500.
The Roback Scholarship is awarded to graduate students currently enrolled or admitted for enrollment in a full-time Master's degree course in public administration, public and international affairs, and/or political science. All applicants must be nominated by their department in order to be considered for the award.
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships
The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,000 graduate fellowships in this competition.
The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.
National Society of Hispanic MBAs
For Latinos pursuing Master's degrees in management/business. Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to full-time and part-time graduate students. Awards range from $2,500 to $5,000 with one $10,000 scholarship.
New England Employee Benefits Council Scholarship Program
The NEEBC Scholarship program seeks to advance the knowledge and education of individuals in the employee benefits field or those aspiring to careers in employee benefits, which include but are not limited to careers in the actuarial sciences; ERISA and legal aspects of employee benefits; careers in pension design and planning; work and family issues; and careers in corporate employee benefits design, analysis and management. Annual awards of up to $5,000.

Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program
The Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship provides funding to participants as they are prepared academically and professionally to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.
The goal of the Fellowship Program is to attract outstanding students who enroll in two-year master's degree programs in public policy, international affairs, public administration, or academic fields such as business, economics, political science, sociology, or foreign languages, who represent all ethnic, racial and social backgrounds and who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career in the U.S. Department of State. The program develops a source of trained men and women who will represent the skill needs of the Department and who are dedicated to representing America's interests abroad.

Albert Schweitzer Fellowship-Boston Schweitzer Fellows Program
The Boston Schweitzer Fellows Program offers year-long fellowships carrying a $2000 stipend to graduate students enrolled in health-related fields. Fellowships are offered to students who design community service projects that address unmet health needs in their local areas. Students are recruited from a wide range of programs and schools, including social policy, health and human services, public health, and law and diplomacy. Currently, 200 hours of direct service are required.

Truman Scholarship Program
The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection.
