Two hundred seventy million people have no health services. An estimated 40 million people in the world are living with HIV/AIDS. Each year 2.2 million children die because they are not immunized. Today, graduates of our Master of Science in International Health Policy and Management (MS/IHPM) degree program are working throughout the world to solve these problems -- in villages, in urban slums, as health care policy makers and managers of organizations and government ministries, and as advocates for equitable global policies on healthcare.
Improving access to health care is a crucial part of economic development. Health care policy makers and managers are often called upon to make difficult decisions about which programs to fund in contexts of limited resources. The MS/IHPM program trains our students in the skills and techniques needed to make tough decisions.
Bringing together planners and implementers, the MS/IHPM program facilitates shared learning to translate research into policy and action. And because the MS/IHPM program trains students in both policy and management, we address the critical gap that often exists between planning and implementation of health programs. Students learn how to make the best use of policy analysis to determine which plans work, which are the most cost-effective, and which are sensitive to a country’s values and culture. The MS/IHPM program provides the student not only with a conceptual framework, but the tools and techniques to engage in policy development and evaluation, and to manage implementation.
Each year approximately three quarters of MS/IHPM students come from developing nations, typically representing more than 30 countries and speaking over 40 languages. The MS/IHPM program is an extraordinary global community that is rich in diversity and experience in international health and development.
The MS/IHPM program has achieved an exceptional reputation with competitive scholarship programs including the Joint Japan / World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program, the Ford Foundation, Soros Foundation / Open Society Institute, and Fulbright. We have a long history of working with international sponsors to bring talented young and mid-career professionals to the MS/IHPM program.
