Second-Year Project

Merrill Wilcox, MA '09The Second-Year: A Live Case Study or Advanced Academic Training
  • A six to nine month practicum within a recognized development organization that nurtures new ideas, deepens field experience and professional growth and is suited to a student’s background, level of experience and career path
  • A practicum that is focused on a development issue or problem and that yields a written Masters Paper in the form of a case study
  • Hundreds of practicum organizations have included major global institutions such as the UN Development Programme, the FAO and the World Bank, international NGOs such as Oxfam, Catholic Relief Services and the Aga Khan Foundation, human rights and policy advocacy organizations, and national and local governments and NGOs throughout the developing world.
  • The second-year practicum makes the Master Degree program affordable as there is no course tuition during the off-campus year
  • The advanced study option includes coursework and independent study at SID under the mentorship of a senior professor
  • The second year culminates in a program-wide Capstone Conference, at which students present their case studies in professional panels
