The Heller School Executive Leadership Program

in Health Policy and Management

Save the dates:   June 23 - June 28, 2008

An intensive, week-long program in health policy and management for senior-level health care providers.

Health care delivery systems operate under conditions of turbulence and are the most complex organizations to manage. Never before has the need for multidisciplinary approaches to problem-solving been more apparent. In the United States, it is time for clinicians to re-emerge as influential actors in the arenas of health policy and management.

Program Overview

This intensive one-week program trains clinical leaders in health care policy and management. It aims to provide health care professionals with the skills essential to creating innovative and sustainable solutions to improve the quality, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency of health care service delivery.

The program includes sessions offering the latest in national and state health policy, along with business theories and frameworks adapted to the challenges of health care management. Program curriculum and content is developed under the guidance of Stuart Altman, Ph.D., Dean of the Heller School and Sol C. Chaikin Professor of National Health Policy, and draws on the unique strengths of the Heller School and the Schneider Institutes for Health Policy.

The program is partially sponsored by the American College of Surgeons and the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education.

Program Goals

The overall goals of the program are as follows:

  • To prepare health care leaders who are deeply committed to helping their organizations fulfill their missions;
  • To equip these leaders with health policy and management frameworks, techniques, concepts and tools so that they can play significant roles in moving their enterprises forward;
  • To create a networking cadre of colleagues in health care policy and management.

By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Thoroughly comprehend and interpret the complexities of health care policy and management;
  • Analyze and interpret health care policy and management issues using tools from both disciplines;
  • Perform environmental scans to analyze policy and programmatic trends;
  • Anticipate challenges and manage changes;
  • Create opportunities for both organizational and personal/professional growth.

The Curriculum

The curriculum is based upon the case method of adult learning, as modeled in the training of clinical and business professionals alike. There will be in-class simulations, group work, and class discussions. The program consists of several modules woven together and applied toward the participant's institutional, professional, and personal goals. The modules build upon each other, encompassing the themes of health policy and management and application of frameworks.

The course curriculum covers the following core competency areas:

  • The Patient, Performance, and Community Experience in
    Health Care
  • Health Care Production Systems and Processes in
    Health Care
  • Leadership of Health Care Organizations
  • Payment Systems, Markets, and the Health Policy Environment

Sample topics covered in the 2006 program:

  • National Health Economics and Policy
  • How National Health Policy Gets Made
  • Managing Clinics and the Care Process
  • Clinical Operations and Coordination
  • Forecasting Health, Surgical Volume and Demand for Surgical Human Resources; Pay-for-Performance
  • Health Care System Performance Measurement and Management

Who Should Participate?

Health care providers and administrators with substantial experience in the health care system will benefit most from this program. As such, the program is open to a variety of health care professionals. Enrollment is limited to ensure quality by keeping the class size small. In the past, this program has included mostly surgeons, but other health care professionals are welcome as well. A limited number of spaces are available at reduced rates for physicians in training and allied health professionals, such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Please contact the Program Coordinator, Linda Purrini (purrini@brandeis.edu), with any questions regarding participation.
