Ambassador Alvaro de Soto

The UN as Peacemaker -- Post Cold-War Lessons

DeSoto

The Master's Program in Coexistence and Conflict at Brandeis University invited Ambassador Alvaro de Soto to speak to the Brandeis community and specifically the master's students on September 22, 2009.  His speech was entitled, "The UN as Peacemaker--Post Cold-War Lesson."  Ambassador de Soto, a Peruvian diplomat, has worked extensively with Secretaries-General Perez de Cuellar, Boutros-Ghali and Kofi Annan.  As the Secretary-General's Personal Representative for the Central American peace process, he led the 1990-1991 negotiations, which ended the decade-long war in El Salvador.  He conducted the 1999-2004 negotiations that led to the draft comprehensive settlement for the Cyprus problem submitted to separate simultaneous referendums consulting the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in April 2004.  He most recently served as the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, before leaving the United Nations in 2007, after a 25-year career.
