Andrew Hahn, PhD'78
Professor

Andrew HahnAndrew Hahn, PhD'78, Professor and Director, The Sillerman Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy, has examined how lessons from American and international experience can be synthesized to shape solutions to diminish youth idleness and promote healthy connections between young people and the economic mainstream in their nations. His work has focused on donor and grantmaker strategies, and generally, the role foundations play in social policy. A leading expert on youth development for international donors, multi-national corporations and American foundations, Hahn directs the Center which enriches the Heller School's educational offerings with research and teaching about contemporary philanthropy and stimulates the growth of effective philanthropy among foundations and philanthropists. During his time at Heller Professor Hahn has served as an Associate Dean, director of the MPP program and was co-founder of the Center for Youth and Communities.  He taught courses on social policy and program evaluation, youth policy, community building and others. In addition to his Heller degree, he received a B.A. from American University as well as an Ed.M. from Harvard University.  Outside of Heller, Professor Hahn serves on the Board of Directors at the Steppingstone Foundation and the Green Light Fund. His many awards include the Heller School Mentoring Award for 2007. Professor Hahn has taught at Heller for 32 years, since 1982.

Susan Holcombe
Professor of the Practice

Susan HolcombeSusan Holcombe, Professor of the Practice, has a background in teaching and publication which builds on a career of practice and a focus on building capabilities for human development. She was Program Director for Oxfam America and has served in various positions with UNFPA, UNIFEM and UNICEF in New York and in multiple field postings. She has participated in or led field evaluations and assessments for the Ford Foundation, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP, World Bank and the University of the South Pacific. During her time at Heller Professor Holcombe taught courses in the MA Program in Sustainable International Development, including Frameworks for Development; Demographics of Development; Governance and Development, Managing Policy and Practice Change in Health Systems and an online, inter-university course, Aligning Policy and Practice with Development Goals and Values. Her research has included a study of management of Grameen Bank and on the scalability of innovative projects for the World Bank. She assists The Poverty Alleviation Fund with program planning and monitoring. Professor Holcombe received her B.A. from Mt. Holyoke College, a M.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, and a PhD from New York University. She was awarded the Heller School Mentoring Award for 2011. She has taught and guided students at Heller for 14 years.

Barry Friedman
Professor

Barry FriedmanBarry Friedman, Professor, has been on the faculty of the Heller School for almost 45 years.  He has studied a variety of social policy areas from welfare to social security and for a variety of countries. He has consulted with the Chinese government and the World Bank on social security policy and has studied aspects of the welfare state in industrial and transition economies. He has taught numerous courses in economics, econometrics, corporate finance, and social policy.  He has worked with many generations of Heller students, both in the classroom and on dissertation committees.  He was awarded the Heller School Teaching Award for 2012.  Friedman received his B.A. from the University of Chicago and his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His retirement at the end of the fall 2014 semester culminates a dedicated career of service at the Heller School.
